Rushing was the mechanical engineer of record and also provided natural ventilation studies and energy modeling for this 1.5 acre exhibit which opened to the public in 2012. The exhibit is located at the site of the former Fun Forest amusement park at Seattle Center. It features a cafe, patio, 50-seat theater, 16,000 square foot garden, and a 12,000 square foot indoor gallery/pavilion. The attraction has nine rooms, each featuring 1 to 25 glass installations. The garden contains four large sculptures. A glass house features Chihuly’s largest sculpture ever, a 4,500 square foot installation measuring 43 feet high. The natural ventilation study analyzed the efficacy of various cooling strategies to reduce the effect of solar gain caused by the quantity of glazing. Radiant slab cooling was analyzed along with operable doors and windows to determine comfort conditions and feasibility of achieving LEED EQc2 and EQc9 credits.
