Mechanical Engineering
Principal: Reed Rushing
Reed is a Principal and Director of Mechanical Engineering. Reed is P.E. certified and has been with Rushing since 2017.
What do you like about working at Rushing?
The daily problem solving, creativity, relationship building, and collaboration. Building design is like a group art project within the constraints of physics, codes, cost, and constructability. Our region is forced to reimagine the way things are done with every change in code cycle. Every new project is a blank canvas in the beginning that eventually turns into a unique masterpiece. What we did on the last project is never the same as what we do on the next one.
What inspired you to get into your field?
My dad is my inspiration. He never pushed me into engineering but it was a natural path for me. Rushing was founded the year I graduated high school and I started working as an intern in the CAD group. Having exposure to the industry before college really helped solidify my chosen field of study and career path.
How have you grown since joining Rushing?
Rushing has given me the opportunity to grow in every way. Aside from my technical engineering growth, I’ve grown even more in ways I never expected to when entering the industry. Managing people, developing empathy, managing client relationships, and being a leader is something you don’t learn in engineering classes in college.
What are a few of your favorite projects you have worked on at Rushing?
I tend to appreciate and reflect on the most complex projects we’ve had. Spire, a triangle-shaped high rise, is one that comes to mind. All the Onni projects present unique challenges that we get to go to school on. The living building pilot program projects (2517 Eastlake, Magnolia Safeway, Western and Cedar) are always a fun puzzle as well.
Which of our core values do you most resonate with?
Courageous transparency has always been our core value that resonates the most with me.
Are you striving to be known for anything in particular?
I want to be known as a great father and husband to my family, an honest and trustworthy friend, and a collaborative, innovative, problem solver in my profession.
What’s on your bucket list?
I enjoy designing and woodworking as a hobby. I hope the day comes where all the furniture in my house was designed and built by me.
