The University of Washington (UW) North Campus Housing project is a 10-year effort to update and expand UW campus housing, adding more than 3,000 beds. Prior to beginning design work for the project, Rushing completed several pre-design studies for the site. The project included one phase which added three buildings, each at 7-9 stories totaling 903 units, to the site—Willow, Madrona and McCarty Halls. Oak Hall is another addition to the site: a 5-story student housing building which will include study lounges, meeting rooms, a great room and District Market and café. Additionally, Rushing performed engineering design to convert the existing Hansee Hall from the campus steam system to an electrical boiler system to improve system energy efficiency and carbon footprint. The project is LEED Gold certified—several halls have already achieved this status.
