Rushing partnered with Andersen Construction to manage the construction process and meet LEED-NC Gold requirements for the new Samuel E. Kelley Ethnic Cultural Center on the University of Washington campus. Rushing’s sustainability studio trained the General Contractor (GC) team to prepare for the LEED Building Design and Construction exam (LEED BD+C) to become LEED Accredited Professionals. In addition, Rushing conducted job site LEED construction coordination meetings, guided the GC team on creation of LEED plans, and tracked construction materials for recycled content, local procurement, low-emitting content, and FSC wood content. In order to ensure thorough material tracking, Rushing also coordinated the submittal process.
The new Ethnic Cultural Center (ECC) on the University of Washington campus replaces the previous ECC which was originally intended to serve as a temporary 10-year facility. In an effort to maintain the essence of the original ECC, walls containing painted murals are being salvaged from the old building and hung within the new space. The ECC will continue to house more than 62 student groups in 22 offices and provide a lively gathering space for students.
