Nathan is passionate about sustainable practices and is devoted to incorporating them into his designs and teaching them to others. He is an experienced energy analyst specializing in quantifying cost and energy saving strategies and establishing energy benchmarks to meet project sustainability goals. Nathan’s expertise includes energy modeling, natural ventilation modeling, systems analysis, all the LEED protocols, and the Living Building Challenge. He is one of only a few engineers in the country to have executed energy analysis and mechanical and plumbing system design for a Living Building Challenge certified project, the Bertschi School Living Science Lab. With over a decade in the design and construction industry, Nathan has instructed and lectured on energy efficiency, sustainable operations and maintenance, net-zero energy, LEED, Living Building Challenge and other sustainability and engineering topics. Nathan has his professional engineer certifications in Washington, California and Maine.

After living in Seattle for almost 15 years, Nathan returned to his home state of Maine while continuing to work remotely for Rushing. He hopes to develop a design approach that blends his Northwest-fostered zeal for sustainability with good old Yankee ingenuity.
