Stefanie Young is a senior sustainability consultant at Rushing. Here, Stefanie gives us a peek into her work-from-home life, her field and a project she’s excited about right now.
Q. How did you get interested in sustainability?
A. Since I was a child, I wanted to help with environment. I first got started by developing a recycling program at my elementary school. From there, I was hooked. When I started looking into my higher education options, I found out that buildings are one of the largest contributors to GHG emissions due to energy use. This fact solidified my path towards the built environment, specifically sustainability consulting for buildings.
Q. What are you doing to keep a routine?
A. I am still as busy as usual so it has been pretty easy to keep a healthy routine going. One of the best ways I’ve found to keep a healthy routine is to put all my appointments/activities in my calendar—including my Ph.D. work. This way I have a regular schedule and anyone who needs to get a hold of me, knows exactly what I am working on.
Q. What has brought you joy this week?
A. Every day my husband and my two dogs (Remmy and Duddles) give me joy. I am thankful and lucky to have them in my life. They continually make me smile. I am also very lucky to be part of my wonderful team! We support each other every week and continue to be positive and helpful.
Q. Have you picked back up any hobbies or started a new one?
A. I am restarting my garden. I haven’t had an active garden since my husband and I moved into our house as our lovely dogs want to eat all the veggies. This past weekend, we built a dog proof fence and will be ready for our seedlings in about two weeks.
Q. How are you staying active?
A. I am working out twice a week with my regular personal trainer and group – through Zoom. It’s been great to see them regularly and keep up the fitness. Also, my husband and I have been walking every other day during lunch just to make sure we are continually stretching our legs.
Q. Which project are you excited about right now?
A. I am very excited about a number of projects right now but if I had to choose one, it would be Sound Transit Puyallup Garage. I am excited about the unique sustainability and biophilic strategies that we are aiming to incorporate as well as weaving in resiliency measures.
