• Seattle City Council has just approved a mid-cycle amendment to the 2018 Seattle Energy Code. Heat pump water heating systems will be required for all commercial new construction starting April 1, 2022, with some exceptions.

  • Heat Pump Water Heaters required for all commercial new construction. Exceptions include:
    • Systems <15 kW
    • Point of Use electric water heaters
    • Existing district steam/hot water systems
    • Existing buildings (will not be triggered for commercial renovations required to comply with C404 under this code cycle)
    • Booster heaters for dishwashers/equipment, etc. may be electric resistance
  • C406 credits are now available for buildings/occupancy areas with large service hot water (SHW) loads, including laboratories.
  • Code change will go into effect on April 1, 2022.
